Entry for February 24, 2008

This week we had everything from bright & sunny, to dark at 3pm overcast skies.  I am still trying to get Ella to pose outdoors for me. I am stubborn, what can I say?  This time I took her out on a bright sunny day with cute little puffball clouds in the sky.

I bribed her with bubbles to get her to stay in approximately the same spot.  It worked ok, but I am still not satisfied with the result.  I will have to try again next week.

This week I got to photograph a couple of sisters.  Unfortunately this was on a day where it was dark at 3pm from the clouds and we only got about 45 min into the shoot when it started to rain. We drove over to downtown Huntsville for this shoot.  We started out in the park, with the intention of hitting the streets and alleys next but Mother Nature had other plans. Even with the rain, and the lack of light we had a great time and the pictures turned out great!  These girls have so much personality and were a joy to shoot.  They had tons of ideas for things they wanted to do in the pictures and I let them have free reign with a little fine tuning from me on the poses.  It helps that they are so cute, but I think this is my favorite shoot so far this year.

I will try to update later this week with a photo tip for you.  Sick husband and kid mean not as much playtime for this photographer.    Anyone have something they would like to know more about, or have a tip they would like to share?

Have a wonderful week!

Entry for February 17, 2008

Things have been so busy and I have decided that a daily blog may be more than I can handle right now.  So I have decided that I will update my blog once a week, on Sunday afternoons.  This gives me enough time to come up with awesome photo tips for you, and to get the rest of my work done too.

Ella’s book has come in!  I am so pleased with the way that it printed.  I think it came out very nice and just how I had pictured it in my head.  Here  is a picture of the book finished.

I tried to get some nice outdoors pictures of Ella this week since the weather was so nice. I ended up with a whole lot of pictures of her back.  I think she still hasn’t quite forgiven me for making her sit for the ABC book.  We did manage to get a couple decent pictures, but I think for now that outside is a little too distracting for portraits.

I had the wonderful pleasure of photographing a charming couple this weekend.  We hiked up to an old rock quarry on the local Oakwood college campus.  This is where they first met 9 years ago!

It has been a long time since I have had the chance to photograph just adults and it was so much fun to have a subject that could follow directions! They were willing to try anything I suggested and I got to try out some things I have had in mind for quite a while.  We also had perfect picture taking weather.  A solid cloud covered sky.  Beautiful light!  Here are some from the session.  I am so excited at how these came out.

And last but not least, here is your photo tip for the week.

Don’t amputate your children!  Since sometimes we don’t want a full body shot of our subject, we have to crop part of their bodies off.  This works as long as you follow a simple rule.  Don’t crop at the joints.  Ankles, knees, waist, elbows, wrists and neck are all bad places to crop a picture.  When you cut people off at a join, your subconscious mind finds it slightly “off” when you look at the picture.  It is much better to crop between the ankle and knee, knee and waist and so on.  For some reason, most people find a picture more pleasing to look at when it is readily apparent that the limb/body continues on past the edge of the picture.  With a joint crop, I suppose somewhere in our heads a little voice is saying… is there a foot attached to that leg?  I have attached below a few examples of good and bad crops.

Full body                          Cut off at ankles        Correct crop

full bodycut at anklesgood crop calves

Cut off at knees            Good crop

cut at kneesgood crop thighs

One thing to remember when cropping up close in the upper body, is that you don’t want just part of a hand, either cut out the whole thing, or leave it all in.  It is ok sometimes to crop off an elbow, as long as enough of the arm remains in the picture to show that there is a whole arm around there somewhere.

Good crop, all fingers intact      Fingers chopped off!

 good crop armscut off fingers

When cropping real close to the head, never cut off the chin.  It is always better to cut off part of the top of the head than the chin.  Quite a bit of the top of the head can be missing without the picture looking weird, but even a little of the chin clipped off can ruin a good picture.

Chin cut off, looks awkward             Head chopped off- less awkward

Sometimes you are going to have a picture that you just LOVE that breaks these “rules” and that is ok, rules are made to be broken after all!  But following these rules will help you to understand when it is ok to break them.

Happy Photographing!

Entry for February 10, 2008

My photo shoot on Saturday was rescheduled by my client, so I will be shooting them next Saturday instead.  This gives  me a chance to drive over to Oakwood this week to scout out the place.  I much prefer to shoot in a place I have at least seen before, so this is a good thing.

I am still awaiting the arrival of Ella's printed book.  According to the printers it is in the mail and will be here sometime between Tuesday and Thursday.  I am anxiously awaiting its arrival.

I am excited to report that I have teamed up with a purse/bag company and will soon be offering photo bags!  They come in all shapes and sizes and are a great way to show your mommy pride!  I will be ordering my samples later this month and when they arrive I will add some pictures along with pricing and style information on my website but for now, here are some company provided imaged with my photographs added.

The "Bucket" bag

The "Messenger" bag

and the Diaper bag

Most of these styles (with the exception of the messenger bag) can have photo's printed on both sides of them if you have more than one picture you love.  I am having the hardest time picking the photograph that I would like to use for my samples, Ella has too many great pictures to choose from!

I don't have a photo tip for you today.  I had one in mind but don't have any pictures on this computer that illustrate it.  I will try to take some tomorrow and post then.

Entry for February 6, 2008

Well, I finally finished my book for Ella.  I got the last three pictures done.  I am not totally satisfied with the “V” picture but Ella was *finished*.  I sent the photos away to be printed today as well.  I can’t wait for my beautiful 8”x8” hardbound book to arrive next week!  I also printed all the pictures myself on my home photo printer.  I am going to laminate them and bind them myself for a “diaper-bag Book” so she can have one that I am not going to worry about her messing around with.   I really wanted to start my next project yesterday as well, but Ella wanted nothing to do with it so we will have to wait until she is ready to be in front of the camera again.

In business news, I have just booked a session for this Saturday on the Oakwood college campus.  I am very excited to go up there since I have heard that it is absolutely gorgeous!  Apparently there is a waterfall there where we will be shooting and I can’t wait to check it out.  It has been a while since I have done an outdoors session and I am so glad that the weather is warming up again and people are ready to start poking their heads out into the sunshine.  Now I have to start praying for no rain this weekend!

Now it is time for your photo tip!

Look for “catch lights”.

A catch light is a sign that you have adequate light in your subject’s eyes.  An eye without a catch light looks dull and dark.  The same eyes with a good catch light are bright and full of color.  A good way to get catch lights is to have the subjects face looking up at you with your light source, (probably the sun) slightly off to the side.  Look for catch lights in people’s eyes as you talk to them.  You can see how they change as their heads move.  The “best” placement for your catch light is on the iris at about 10 or 2 o’clock.  A good catch light will be relatively large as well.  The catch lights caused by on camera flashes are called “pin lights” because they are so small. Pin lights are considered unattractive by most photographers and are avoided if possible.  Avoid using your on camera flash when possible, this not only eliminates pin lights, but red eye as well!
